Protest gegen höhere Studiengebühren in London
Studenten stürmen Parteizentrale der Tories
Aufgebrachte Studenten haben in London bei einer Demonstration gegen Studiengebühren die Parteizentrale der regierenden konservativen Partei gestürmt. Demonstranten drangen in den Gebäudekomplex am Themseufer ein. Einigen gelang es, auf das Dach vorzudringen, wo sie Transparente entrollten. Fensterscheiben gingen zu Bruch, aus dem Demonstrationszug wurden Wurfgeschosse auf Polizisten geschleudert. Die Beamten setzten Schlagstöcke ein. Sowohl Polizisten als auch Studenten wurden verletzt.
Vor dem Parteihochhaus entzündeten Demonstranten auch ein Feuer. Hunderte Angestellte mussten nach einem Feueralarm das Gebäude räumen, in dem auch die Büros zahlreicher Firmen untergebracht sind.
Zuvor friedliche Proteste

Zuvor waren tausende Studierende bei einem Protestmarsch durch das Regierungsviertel gezogen. Nach Angaben der Studenten-Organisation NUS beteiligten sich 30.000 junge Leute an dem Protest. Die Polizei sprach von 9000 Teilnehmern. Es war die größte Demonstration gegen die konservativ-liberale Regierung seit Amtsantritt von Premier David Cameron im Mai.
Die Studenten brachten ihre Wut darüber zum Ausdruck, dass die Regierung den Universitäten erlauben will, bei “außergewöhnlichen Umständen” die Studiengebühren auf bis zu 9000 Pfund (rund 10.440 Euro) pro Studienjahr fast zu verdreifachen. Bisher zahlen Studierende an Universitäten in England, Wales und Nordirland bis zu 3200 Pfund pro Studienjahr. Die Gebührenanhebung soll zur Entlastung des britischen Haushalts beitragen. Insgesamt will die Regierung 81 Milliarden Pfund (rund 94 Milliarden Euro) in den kommenden vier Jahren aus dem Budget streichen, um die Rekordverschuldung des Landes einzudämmen.
Die vorgesehene Gebührenanhebung mache die Hochschulen des Landes zu “Sperrgebieten für junge Menschen aus einfachen Verhältnissen”, sagte Frances O’Grady vom Gewerkschaftsdachverband. Sollten Abgeordnete der an der Regierung beteiligten Liberaldemokratischen Partei ihr Wahlversprechen brechen und im Parlament für die Gebührenerhöhung stimmen, werde man die Aufhebung ihrer Mandate anstreben, kündigte die nationale Studentengewerkschaft an.
